How to Map a Process
Step 1: Define the Scope
What process are you mapping? Where does it start and end?
Example: "Customer onboarding from signed contract to first project kickoff"
Step 2: Gather Information
- Interview people who do the work
- Observe the process in action
- Review existing documentation
- Check system logs and data
Step 3: Identify Steps
List every action in order. Don't skip "obvious" steps.
Step 4: Note Decision Points
Where do paths diverge? What triggers each path?
Step 5: Document Inputs/Outputs
What goes into each step? What comes out?
Step 6: Assign Ownership
Who is responsible for each step?
Step 7: Add Time and Metrics
How long does each step take? What's the wait time between steps?
